The Global Knowledge
II meeting in Kuala Lumpur in March 2000 brought together organisations
and institutions from throughout the world to explore the potential of,
and form partnerships on, the effective use of knowledge and ICTs to support
development. The European Union, working with the World Bank as a central
organiser of the event and of the GK Partnership, are keenly aware of the
need for ACP countries (i.e. signatories of the Lomé Convention
with the EU) to engage effectively in this process, in order to build up
their capacity to generate and use knowledge for development. With funds
from the European Union’s Development Directorate and the cooperation from
the World Bank, it was therefore decided to launch a project that would:
